The Call

What the model says

No prediction was logged before kickoff — nothing to grade. Calls are never graded retroactively.

Pre-baked lean (June 11): Hwang's absence would tilt a coin-flip game toward Czechia's second-ball grind.

Stakes

The table as it stands

The Read

Tactical preview

Group A, MD1 | Thu June 11 — 10:00 PM ET (FS1) | Estadio Akron, Guadalajara

Two back-three teams with opposite intentions. Hong Myung-bo's Korea shape-shift between back three and back four mid-match, pushing wingbacks and lateral CBs forward from a 3-4-3 into a 4-2-4 to overload the flanks — all designed to reduce Son Heung-min's workload and let him play target man. Koubek's Czechia run a 3-4-3 that becomes a 4-1-5, cycling the ball laterally in the back line and going vertical to the wide areas, where multiple proficient crossers and a refined set-piece operation feed Patrik Schick's elite aerial threat. The catch for Korea: the whole system runs through Hwang In-beom's spatial intelligence, and he's recovering from an ankle injury. The catch for Czechia: if Korea's technical midfield (Lee Kang-in, Paik) controls tempo, Czechia's strength — winning second balls in the opponent's half via Krejčí, Hranáč and Souček — never activates.

Key Duel

Kim Min-jae vs Patrik Schick in the air. Czechia's crossing-and-set-piece game lives or dies on whether Korea's best defender can neutralize Schick's aerial dominance.

Watch For

Pavel Šulc — Lyon's playmaker, 2025 Czech Footballer of the Year, the rare Czech creator "not seen since Nedvěd or Rosický." Son in his new target-man role. Rising stars: Jens Castrop (KOR, first foreign-born mixed-heritage player for Korea) and Štěpán Chaloupek (CZE).

Shapes & Selection

KOR 3-4-2-1 — Hwang In-beom's fitness is the question. CZE 3-4-2-1 — settled; Chaloupek vs Holeš/Zima for the third CB spot. (Verify day-of.)

Margin Notes

Koubek, 74, spent 20 years of his coaching career also working as an insurance broker. Slavia Praha supply 10 players here — the most of any club to one squad at this World Cup. Hong has endured a media storm over an interview implying assistant João Aroso actually runs tactics.

Selection notes were pre-baked June 11 and are verified day-of in the edition, not here — anything marked “verify” must be confirmed before it is load-bearing.

The Market

Odds & best bet

No odds were logged for this match — the market workflow (CLAUDE.md Phase 3: odds_log.csv, de-vig, edge vs threshold) was not live before kickoff.

Markets to watch (pre-baked): the draw; Schick anytime scorer once props are in scope.
