The System

Tactical profile

Opportunistic out-of-possession defense, swift transition play and sound overseas recruiting have all been hallmarks of Bubista's tenure since taking over the post of head coach in 2020. Cape Verde's run through CAF qualifying saw them utilise a number of back four variants, most typically a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 that flattens out in defense and has a knack for compacting space centrally to win the ball and initiate counterattacks via fast-paced combination play on the wings.

The back line features a stable central pairing of Diney Borges and Pico Lopes. At fullback, Trabzonspor's Wagner Pina missed much of qualifying through injury (with Steven Moreira deputising) but may regain his place on the right due to his ball-winning, crossing and vertical passing ability. João Paulo held the position on the left for most of qualifying, but Benfica's Sidny Lopes Cabral is an intriguing option as the most skilled progressor of the ball in this position group.

The constants further up the pitch are Kevin Pina as the defensive linchpin and ballwinner at midfield, captain Ryan Mendes on the right wing and qualifying top scorer Dailon Livramento up front. There is fluidity at the other positions, especially in the other midfield roles where Jamiro Monteiro, Deroy Duarte and Telmo Arcanjo all rotate in frequently.

Key player

The players around him may rotate from match to match, but Kevin Pina is central to Cape Verde's tactical identity. The Krasnodar midfielder's spatial awareness and ability to win the ball 1v1 are the best in the squad, and the team's ability to organise defensively and initiate counterattacks stem from his positional sensibility.

Rising star

Dutch-born Sidny Lopes Cabral had only played half a season in Liga Portugal when Benfica swooped in to acquire him from Estrela da Amadora for a reported €6m fee. The 22-year old from Rotterdam has played all up and down the pitch on both wings and is an extremely capable ballcarrier, though his natural and most frequent position is at right wing-back.

Fun fact

Irish-born Roberto "Pico" Lopes was recruited to the national team via LinkedIn DMs, in one of the rare ethical applications of this feature.
