The System

Tactical profile

When it comes to overarching strategy, France manager Didier Deschamps is towards the laissez-faire end of the spectrum. Deschamps gives his team a basic out-of-possession structure and allows the incredibly talented cast of characters at his disposal, especially in the front line, a huge amount of agency to solve the problems posed by the opposition. This front four is likely to consist of some iteration of Kylian Mbappé, Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, each of whom can interchange positions with their teammates in this forward line and destabilise opponents' defensive structures on their own. With Bradley Barcola and Rayan Cherki waiting in the wings, this has to be the most terrifying attacking outfit in the competition.

Behind them, there is a supporting cast tasked with supplying them the ball and covering them when they lose it. Expect to see Deschamps favourite Adrien Rabiot paired with Aurélien Tchouaméni - Rabiot stepping up and Tchouaméni covering behind. Théo Hernandez will get forward as he likes to from left back, allowing Jules Koundé to tuck inside alongside the two centre backs. If this unit can provide adequate backup to the attackers, it's hard to see France failing to go deep in this year's edition of the World Cup; it's more likely their problems emerge from off the pitch than on it.

Key player

Michael Olise comes into this World Cup off the back of a 25/26 where he cemented himself as a global superstar. While the hype around him has been growing for nearly half a decade now, this season saw him mark a gaudy 48 goal involvements across all competitions. His starring role in 'that' Champions League semi against PSG was a highlight.

Rising star

This World Cup comes just too early for Robin Risser to really make an impact, but that's very much not been the case in the domestic season. The Lens goalkeeper had a fantastic debut season in Ligue 1 after moving from Red Star last summer. With Lucas Chevalier stuttering this season, Risser could be between the posts for France next World Cup.

Fun fact

Dayot Upamecano told Sport Bild in 2023 that he had been working with an opera singer to improve his vocal technique - he would often have a sore throat after shouting loudly on the pitch during matches.
