The System

Tactical profile

Following a 4-1 battering to Switzerland and a tepid 1-1 draw against Slovenia to kick off his tenure, Graham Potter's Sweden seemingly found their footing in the final two matches of qualifying, employing a back three shape with a wingback duo of Gabriel Gudmundsson on the left and Daniel Svensson, a natural left-back, in an inverted position on the right. There is a lingering question of whether Svensson will remain the first option at RWB - Emil Holm was the only natural right-back in the squad, but withdrew due to a calf injury. Isak Hien is also just back from injury - so there is also a potential domino effect where Hien being out would cause Victor Lindelöf or Carl Starfelt to move into the CCB spot, with Svensson LCB (as the only left-footer), and Herman Johansson or Alexander Bernhardsson filling in at RWB.

Further up the pitch, Potter seems roughly set with the central midfield pairing of Jesper Karlström and Yasin Ayari. Victor Gyökeres was often used in a striker partnership with Alexander Isak before Potter signed on. Isak seems to be over his fitness troubles, but if not, Benjamin Nygren and Anthony Elanga would instead slot in behind. In the final against Poland, this arrangement proved more fluid in practice - it was Ayari that pushed up to facilitate interchange with the attacking line, while the left-footed Elanga spent more time up the pitch to threaten on goal cutting in from the right.

Key player

While it's been a season of ups and downs for Viktor Gyökeres, he still has 21 goals in all competitions for an Arsenal that almost won a European double. At his best, he's a goal-scoring machine capable of taking over a game with his athleticism, and when fit has been a rare pillar of consistency for Sweden in a tumultuous World Cup qualifying cycle.

Rising star

Yasin Ayari arrived at Brighton four months after Potter's departure, but has more than made up for lost time as a trusted contributor for the Blågult. The 22-year old primarily operates in a deeper-lying role for the Seagulls, but with the national team Potter allows him ample freedom to leverage his vigorous workrate and surge forward in a box-to-box role.

Fun fact

Sweden remain the only country to lose in a final of the World Cup as the hosts, suffering a 5-2 defeat to Brazil in 1958 at the Råsunda stadium.
